MCLE Theater Night
Wednesday, May 3
Please join us for a special MCLE theater event featuring the Pasadena Playhouse's The Originalist.
When a bright, liberal law school graduate embarks on a nerve-wracking clerkship with Justice Antonin Scalia, she discovers him to be both an infuriating sparring partner and an unexpected mentor. As the country waits for Scalia's seat to be filled, The Originalist looks into the complexities of one of the most polarizing Supreme Court Justices of all time. This powerful work portrays the passionate people risking heart and soul to defend their interpretation of the truth, and the Constitution.
Join us for an informal reception of light desserts and drinks before the show. Immediately following the play, Michelle K. Sugihara, Executive Director of Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE), will lead a short CLE discussion. 0.5 hours of MCLE credit will be provided.

ArtWallah is back! After a ten-year hiatus, ArtWallah: Resistance, Resilience and Resonance will take place in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, May 6. The original ArtWallah festivals promoted the experience of the South Asian diaspora through art and dialogue.
Fast forward 10 years, and we find the spirit of ArtWallah to still be...
...Resisting
We are resisting the politics that divide us internally and from each other. We speak out against policies that oppress minority groups, combat hate and ignorance toward Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, and other faiths, are on the front lines protecting and advocating for the rights of each other, immigrants, other PoC, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and anyone else who faces marginalization in our current political climate.
...Resilient
There is an inward and outward story of resilience so many of us carry. We fight against internalized patriarchy, classism, and racism, but also find joy and freedom of expression in the culture and traditions of our ancestors and of our past. We are celebrating our resilience as individuals and as a community.
...Finding Resonance
We look for commonalities between and with each other, and we don't find our differences to be a threat. Through our artistic expression and/or professional work, we are building relationships and are uplifting each other. Part of our commitment to each other as part of a larger South Asian community is to validate each others' experiences as legitimate and worthy of sharing, and find ways to help each other succeed in our personal and professional realms.

South Asian Network (SAN): South Asian Network is looking for immigration attorneys or individuals who are BIA accredited to provide legal advice at citizenship clinics on Saturday, April 22. To volunteer, please contact Tami Shaikh at

SAN Citizenship Clinic will be taking place in Norwalk Library on Saturday, June 24).

Public Counsel: Public Counsel is always looking for law student and lawyer volunteers. Visit their volunteer page to learn how you can
get involved. Public Counsel maintains a list of cases that need more advanced assistance
here and lawyers can sign up for their monthly "Top 10 List" to receive monthly updates of the most urgent cases.
AAAJ-OC: Asian Americans Advancing Justice Orange County (AAAJ-OC) is looking for immigration attorneys who'd be interested in volunteering and helping coordinate future pro bono immigration clinics in Orange County.

National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON): is looking for volunteers for their Deportation Defense Clinics. Clinics are held on the first Saturday of every month. The next clinic is:

2017 SABA North America Foundation Grants
The SABA North America Foundation is accepting applications for its 2017 Grants!
The Foundation develops and funds public interest projects that benefit the South Asian community in the following areas: domestic violence; immigration rights; hate crimes, discrimination and racial profiling; and community access to justice.
Last year's grantees included Apna Ghar, Inc. (Our Home), Daya Houston, Indo-American Center, and South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario. These organizations used Foundation grants to expand legal advocacy services that help immigrant clients understand their rights and legal remedies, provide legal assistance for victims of domestic violence and further the work of research and study on the incidence of forced marriage.
To apply for this year's grants, complete the Foundation's online application by April 24, 2017.
